Early detection increases the overall success rates; we recommend regular oral and dental check-ups to facilitate early diagnosis. The earlier the abnormality is detected, the smaller the ulcer is likely to be. However, if you require additional tests, we can also book you in for further examinations. During oral cancer screening examinations, our dentists will look for any white patches or mouth sores in your mouth and check for any lumps. Symptoms for oral cancer can include:

So what are the tips for a healthy mouth?
- Regular visits your dentist and hygienist.
- Whilst brushing your teeth look out for any abnormalities like ulcers (they can be painless) or any red or white patches.
- Sun exposure: use a lip balm with sun protection and avoid over exposure.
- Eat a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients.
- Cut down on smoking and drinking.
Results
If we spot any precarious signs after the full examination, we may recommend a follow-up visit. This is normally arranged for a few weeks after the first examination to see if the abnormal areas are still present and to analyse the growth. Here, if we notice that it is growing and it poses a high cancer risk, we will offer an urgent referral for biopsy procedure to assess the area.
